Winter takes a firm hold and temperatures plummet at this time. Sometimes this moon is also called the Long Night Moon as the winter nights lengthen and the moon spends more time above the horizon opposite a low sun.

Will December 2009 have a Blue Moon?

The two brightest celestial bodies to light up these glorious September nights are the waxing gibbous moon and the extremely bright planet Jupiter. The Waxing Gibbous Moon is very nearly full and illuminated generally from the right.

August 5, the full Moon is having a close encounter with Jupiter. The two are so bright; you won't even need a sky map to find them.

The August full moon is often called the Sturgeon Moon in North America. the Full Sturgeon Moon to climb over your southeast horizon shortly after sunset. About a half hour thereafter, the blazing planet Jupiter follows the moon into the sky. Evening’s two brightest celestial luminaries keep each other company for the rest of the night.
